Hotel Bühelwirt

Valle Aurina - Hillside Hotel

Pedevilla Architects as Architects

Extension to the existing hotel The existing building is located at the Bühel at 1.300m and is extended to the east on the property below. The concept provides for a compact volume, which is connected to the stock via a narrow bridge. The expansion building is positioned in the north of the property so as not to limit the existing structure in its use, with regard to visual relations and solar radiation. The asymmetrically placed saddle roof also cleverly cleans the rooms in the building, reacting simultaneously to urban conditions. The distorted ground plan strengthens the sustainable concept: on the south and east sides the façade and roof are maximally extended, while the area in the north is reduced. The extension includes over 6 floors. In addition to 20 new room units, a wellness area and the expansion of the restaurant was also planned.

The proposed enlargement is understood as "continuousconstructing". Which means to keep what has proved itself and what is spatially good, and only intervene where this is necessary. The existing structure remains intact and at the same time is undergoing an upgrade. A new offer of two-dimensional structures and spatial connections is created in order to meet the requirements for communication and exchange. The compact ground plan shape of the new extension offers an economical division with reduced access areas. Through the arrangement of all areas as far as the outer façade is concerned, an optimal use of daylight is ensured. The compact access area allows easy orientation.

Regional added value with high memorability When designing the façade, the child-friendly window and / or parapet height plays a special role, which is executed in the form of a homely sitting area in local wood. The proposed design of the facade creates a high recognition-value, lifts the building beyond a simple residential building and thus conveys the overriding importance as a new "hotel". The interplay of natural materials gives the building warmth and natural beauty.

The simple geometry of the building envelope, robust simple details and the reduction to a few materials guarantee a high sustainability. We use familiar, regional materials that are low in pollutants and low emissions. Primary use of wood materials in domestic larch in the interior and in the outer wall construction. The entire basic construction has been carried out in reinforced concrete and thus achieves maximum storage capacity. Reinforced concrete as room storage mass for summer night cooling. Characteristic elements of the local building typology are translated and interpreted in a linguistic way: the use of local wood (larch) for the wood claddings takes colour and structural reference to the surrounding landscape. These measures guarantee a "living" appearance of the façade, which changes according to the sun's rays. Rugged mineral soils (terrazzo with domestic gravels) are planned in the heavily frequented development zones. In the rooms are softer soils from regional wood economy planned (larch). In addition to the wooden cladding, lime and clay plasters with local sands are used.
