UKIYO listening bar is an interior renovation project in the city center of Nicosia Cyprus, completed in 2021. One of the key challenges was to facilitate both the functions of a restaurant and a listening bar with a unified architectural identity, in a small existing space.
The concept of Listening Bars first came to surface around the 50s in Japan, with spaces that were equipped with high quality sound systems and acoustic properties for playing vinyl records. The records playing through high quality audio systems aims in providing a high-end acoustic experience to their users while enjoying their favorite tunes over a drink.
UKIYO’s design elements and concept derived from the Japanese architectural character of the 50s and 60s Listening Bars, shaping a warm, welcoming atmosphere.
The materials used in the interior are carefully selected in order to absorb the sound waves and enhance the sound quality of the space. Materials such as perforated chipboard in natural wood and black finish in combination with the furniture help in improving the acoustics of the space. Black metal finishes extend to the outdoor space of the bar, giving the project a contemporary and harmonious look.
The interior of the Bar is characterized by its imposing continuity of the wooden pattern starting from the ceiling and continues vertically on the masonry wall. The pattern transforms into the storage furniture for the bar and display for the vinyl area behind the DJ box.
The front of the store includes a continuous, double-sided bar furniture which connects the interior restaurant area with the exterior terrace allowing seamless interaction with both spaces. All windows fold to the side, fully integrating the use of the exterior and the interior, utilizing the space to the maximum.
