Spina-Dorsale

PadiglioneB Studio di Architettura as Architects

This work is about the complete renovation of an apartment located at the first floor of a building built during the late 80s. The context is not built with quality elements so the idea is to demolish everything inside in order to reconfigure the plan according to the owner’s requirement.

SPINA DORSALE, thant means backbone, is set up with a sharp cut of the space and like a spine it support and split all the living spaces of the apartment: the public space is separated from the private space. SPINA DORSALE is a furniture custom made and built onsite by our carpenter and it organizes the space from the entrance to the kitchen including in itself all the functions: wardrobe, bookcase, kitchen.

The passage to the private rooms is allowed by an invisible door consisting in one of the shutters ok the wardrobe. All the details are made in order to hide this passage as a sort of joke. All the functions put inside SPINA DORSALE had been put on set with strict connection with the owner’s needs in order to create something like a cloth stiched over the body.

This functions are underlined by three different recesses enhanced by a different colour from the remainig part of the furniture: the wardrobe is painted with a dark blue finish instead of the recesses that are painted with a lobster red finish. The alternance betweenn full and empty space is underlined by the colours and details as light, molding and the worktop of the kitchen that is made in Carrara marble by Marsotto Edizioni.

The master bedroom is painted with a mural from the visual artist called MENT, a geometrical drawing in which some volumes inntersect themselves giving form to a brand new space. This mural gives a sense of three-dimension and depth: nex to the wall stand out the hanging bed Fluttua by Lago Design giving a sense of lightness and playfulness as the bed seems to fluctuate in a blurred space.

The mirror Les Brother by Paolo Cappello for Miniforms bring us to reality showing us this trick in its reflection. Bathrooms are a playground for experimentation: we wanted to give those spaces an optical allure referring to the deometrical painting of the bathroom. This iconic feeling is put on set by using simple square ceramic tiles with contrast grout lines.

The furniture is also designed by our office in order to obbrain a neutral feeling over this dramatic environment. The apartment is completed with masterpiece furniture and lighting such as Wever&Ducrè, Flos, DLM coffee-table by HAY, LC6 Tube d’Avion table by Cassina designed by Le Corbusier and Fifties Chairs by Calligaris. All these pieces dialogue with SPINA DORSALE without overwhelming one another. Lastly the concrete flooring is like a theatrical background through all the apartment and it creates a sense of neutral backdrop over which stand out the SPINA DORSALE wardrobe.
