KF Skolen in Stavanger combines traditional architecture with modern design, featuring a classic gable roof with an asymmetrical twist. Built primarily in mass timber, the school offers a warm and inviting atmosphere while ensuring sustainability and a healthy indoor climate. In 2022, it was awarded Nohrcon’s “School Building of the Year.”

A Thoughtful and Functional Design
The school is organized into four pavilions connected by bright and open common areas. At the core is a four-story atrium, the “heart” of the school, which serves as a social and functional hub. This space connects all floors visually and physically, incorporating an amphitheater-style staircase for gatherings, teaching, and play.

A Learning Environment Designed for Growth
Interior spaces are designed with flexibility and student well-being in mind. Corridors include reading nooks and seating areas, encouraging interaction and informal learning. A carefully selected color scheme helps define different age groups: soft blue for younger students, vibrant yellow for middle grades, and bold pink for older students.

Safe and Engaging Outdoor Spaces
The schoolyard is designed as a diverse and active environment, with playgrounds, green spaces, and activity areas. A natural stormwater management system has been integrated, and safe traffic solutions prioritize walking and cycling routes over vehicle access.

A School for the Future
KF Skolen is built with a strong focus on sustainability, inclusivity, and flexibility. Constructed in mass timber, the building ensures a healthy indoor climate, while exposed wood surfaces contribute to a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Universal design principles make the school accessible to all, with step-free connections, clear wayfinding, and excellent acoustics.

The learning spaces are designed for adaptability, allowing for different teaching methods—from traditional classroom settings to group work, presentations, and interactive learning. Special rooms like "blackbox" spaces enable creative and dynamic use of light and sound, while foldable walls between classrooms create flexible environments for various teaching needs.

By combining traditional architectural forms with modern functionality, KF Skolen is designed to support students at every stage of their education, creating a safe, inspiring, and future-oriented learning environment.
