Located in scenic surroundings by the Hardangerfjord in Øystese, Hardangerbadet is a modern bath and wellness centre designed to integrate harmoniously with its environment. Inspired by Western Norwegian building traditions, the architectural expression is both contemporary and rooted in tradition, using carefully selected materials that reflect the region’s heritage.

The centre offers a competition pool, a family pool with slides, climbing walls, and a countercurrent channel, as well as a therapy pool with an adjustable floor. In addition to the swimming facilities, the building houses health and wellness services, including physiotherapy, medical offices, and treatment rooms, making it a comprehensive health hub for the community.

A distinct feature of Hardangerbadet is its layered material composition. The base is clad in slate, grounding the structure in the landscape. The swimming areas are wrapped in aluminum with a diagonal grid pattern, creating a striking contrast, while the upper floor is finished in wood, bringing warmth and a natural feel to the design. This approach ensures both durability and an inviting atmosphere.

Beyond being a recreational facility, Hardangerbadet plays a key role in the local community, serving as a year-round meeting place that enhances Øystese’s appeal for both residents and visitors. The project also contributes to increased activity in the town centre, strengthening social life and local engagement.
