Spain's built landscape is a cultural mosaic, rooted in history and informed by a plethora of cultures and architectural styles. From Roman colonization to Islamic rule during the medieval period, each era has contributed to the architectural palimpsest that defines Spain today. The Moorish architecture, characterized by intricate geometric patterns and stunning arches, can still be witnessed in iconic landmarks such as the Alhambra in Granada. Similarly, the Gothic cathedrals and Romanesque churches across the country reflect Spain's European influences during the Middle Ages.

Even in contemporary context, modernism or “modernismo” in Spain, embraced its rich, ornamental past, drawing inspiration from global influences like Art Nouveau, establishing a distinct architectural expression that mirrored the nation's singular cultural identity. Over time, the country’s development boomed evolved with large-scale urban expansions and plans that continue to dictate the social housing projects of today. In recent years efforts have been made to retain this vibrant architecture and culture through adaptive reuse and sustainable coexistence. Alberto Campo Baeza, originally from Valladolid but raised in Cádiz, is a distinguished architect and an Emeritus Head Professor of Design at the Madrid School of Architecture. With over 35 years of tenure, he has also taught at renowned institutions such as ETH Zurich, EPFL Lausanne, University of Pennsylvania, Kansas State University, CUA University in Washington, and L’Ecole d’Architecture in Tournai. Recently, he held the Clarkson Chair in Architecture at Buffalo University and was the Walton Critic Speaker at CUA in Washington. Additionally, Alberto Campo Baeza has shared his knowledge and expertise as a visiting professor at the School of Architecture in Barcelona and the New York Institute of Technology. 17. Miralles Tagliabue EMBT

Benedetta Tagliabue - EMBT is a well-established architecture studio that was founded in 1994 by Benedetta Tagliabue and Enric Miralles in Barcelona. Their partnership began during the vibrant period of the Barcelona'92 Summer Olympic Games, which influenced their architectural journey. Together, they embarked on various significant projects, including the New Scottish Parliament Building in Edinburgh, the Utrecht City Hall in the Netherlands, and the Headquarters of Gas Natural Fenosa. Tragically, Enric Miralles passed away in 2000, and Benedetta Tagliabue took the helm as the sole partner, successfully completing Enric's unfinished projects while initiating new ones.
