Niekée

New building for a pre-vocational secondary education (VMBO) school

LIAG architects as architect

Dynamic world of learning

Niekée is the result of a merger of three pre-vocational secondary education (VMBO) locations in Roermond. A facilitary centre was required where the pupil plays a central role and where all pupils can develop their capabilities to the full.

Interaction of pupils central LIAG began by adapting the Programme of Requirements to the educational philosophy of the school. This meant that the work places and workshops had to be close to the heart of the school and visible to all the users. A vital part of the chosen solution is raising the central area. From here there is a view of and into all the work places, whereby the required visual interaction is achieved of its own accord. In addition to fixed lessons, pupils can develop themselves further by means of the ‘Wings programme'.

In order to also be able to guarantee a varied use for the future, a few consultation and work areas are suspended as cubicles in the open space and the floor has remained free from architectural obstacles. On the one hand, the cubicles serve to determine various places and on the other hand they give a continually changing perspective.
