The Red House School Santana has a completely new building integrated with free
areas of conviviality, with independent flows between the spaces of Kindergarten and Elementary School.
The entire main volume of the school is surrounded by a large open courtyard that contains playground areas. After all, we believe that learning happens outside too: for every moment of leisure, a new discovery! In addition, this configuration allows visual interaction between the floors and also ensures natural lighting and ventilation in all classrooms.
To solve the issue of noise that collective living environments can cause to their
surroundings, which can as a consequence divert the attention of students in class,
we solved it in the following way: We joined the spaces that produce the most noise,
the court and the cafeteria. The indoor court was built suspended and below it the
canteen integrated with the central patio, so that both remain isolated causing greater comfort to the other environments. For us, the court is a place that encourages socializing, collaborative work, creativity and cognitive development, where students explore other activities besides sports.
Thus, at Red House School in Santana it is important that learning environments are
aligned to the methodology and prioritize unique experiences for each student. In
practice, we try to deconstruct the idea that the teacher is at the head of the learning
process and the chairs lined up in front of the blackboard. We want students to be the protagonists of their own learning process, providing them with collaborative
environments that encourage exchange and the search for knowledge.
At the new Red House School unit in Santana, São Paulo, there is no lack of options for the most diverse ways of studying, learning and sharing. Offering the best possibilities for students and teachers to feel good in the most diverse situations was our main goal for this project.
