A remodeling reflected on its users life

Chain + Siman as Interior Architects

The remodeling of Departamento T, a 415 m2 home in Mexico City, arose from the need for a radical change in the space to reflect a new chapter in the life of its user.
The apartment occupies the entire 8th floor of a building in the urban heart of Mexico City, a refuge from the clamor of the streets. Since the client is the only family member living at the residence, the remodel revolved around her personality and particular needs, without the need to maintain much privacy between rooms.

Dramatic contrasts define the layout: black and white tones, polished marble and walnut, modern elements in classic settings. Conceptual coherence played an important role when selecting the materials, so black panels define the flow between public and private areas, while neutral colors dominate the living areas. Fun details, such as a vibrant yellow paint as a visual highlight, create accents in the clean and sophisticated style of the predominant white that unifies the project atmosphere.

The building features a central circulation core with an elevator that rises to the entrance door. A Barrisol stretch ceiling fills the lobby with white light that reflects off the marble. Polished wood, stained black, delineates the transition space to the living room and connects to the kitchen.

To take advantage of the lighting and maximize the space, the traditional closed dining room was converted into an open area and integrated into the rest of the room. It was also connected to the kitchen using black ironwork arches, which provide a classic touch in a contemporary transition. These arches, featuring impeccable Mexican craftsmanship, are replicated to link the kitchen to the foyer in the same way.

In the kitchen, Eclipse granite countertops and ARCLINEA cabinetry finished in PDV black stainless steel contain built-in luxury appliances, including a MAC, while sculptural HENGE light fixtures are the focal point of the space. An enclosed prep kitchen complements the primary kitchen, which is integrated into the room. Three balconies connect the apartment with the exterior: a small one in the kitchen, another in the study, and a third, the largest of all, is shared by the living room and the primary bedroom. It contains a small landscaping intervention by Pedro Sánchez that blends the vegetation with the interior atmosphere.

In addition to the selection of Italian furniture in several rooms, custom furniture pieces were designed for the living room, bedroom and study. The choice of gray textiles supports the monochrome composition of the rooms and highlights the atmospheres that break with that premise. For example, the main dressing room was conceived as a personal showroom with a vintage tinge. The oak panels with a bronze-finished mirror highlight the circular ceiling lamps, shaped from Barrisol.

The piano in the living room and selected works of art are, due to their sentimental value, among the few pieces that were preserved in their pre-intervention state. However, the rest of this interior project was inspired by a fusion of Parisian and New York styles, resulting in a chic, sophisticated and original apartment.
