Casa Táankab

The project arises on an irregular and extensive ground, although with a small front; where the architectural program allowed us to develop a house on one floor, only with a study on the second level.

In the arrangement of the spaces, the orientation towards the north predominates to avoid exposing them to the sun directly, in the same way, the orientation allows natural ventilation cooling the interior areas of the house.

The access route starts from a garden with Yucatan’s endemic vegetation along with a corridor that is characterized by a wall with a red chukum finish and a stone wall, which was taken from the excavation of the site. Then you are received by the public spaces of the house which are completely open to a large garden and pool; Private spaces such as rooms are completely isolated by a private hall. The arrangement of the volumes allows us to maintain the north views and cross ventilation in all spaces. Between the private and public areas there is a two-story volume with a game room and an office, located in such a way that an intermediate “semi-private” space emerges.

Through the course of the project you find interior patios that help both vestibulate spaces and separate private from public areas, as well as ventilate the interior of such spaces. The final product highlights and gives priority to outdoor spaces, where the family operates most of the day, giving users prominence.

The layout of the volumes and the general form of the project arises from the concept of creating a “modern hacienda” within the city, taking up the concept of a central courtyard to achieve ventilation and connectivity between the spaces. With contemporary design elements such as columns and steel beams, polished concrete slats, dynamic volumes, and the combination of these with classic elements of Yucatecan architecture, such as the use of “bahareque” ceilings, chukum walls, natural and red, interior patios and louver windows, we achieve an environment with references to the origins of the region.
