ALLERØD KULTURTORV

URBAN POWER as Architects

Located between two important forest areas, Allerød Kulturtorv is a unique site, rich in culture, nature and history.

The proposal focuses on the opportunity to establish a green connection in the city center, bringing nature into the site´s public spaces and creating a space where the users can both be close to each other and to nature. Residential buildings and multiple public functions are placed along the urban areas and contribute to activate them.

The public square in front of Mungo Park Theatre is designed as an informal and intimate green oasis, where the users can meet in between the vegetation pockets. The open facades of the new associations premises on the ground floor of the residential complex, are designed to be open and, together with the theatre, interact with the outdoor spaces.

The green connection extends towards the south, where the old Fritz Hansen´s furniture factory was located. Between the existing library and a new residential building, the open spaces are supplemented with a play area and lush vegetation, which also acts as a rainwater basin. Here, a new café is placed and contributes to creating a lively meeting point for the city.

The facades of the residential building along the green connection are designed to interact with it through terraces, plants and setbacks, tying the cultural institutions on site together and providing a lively and green urban environment.
