El Ray

Dungeness beach is a classic example of ‘Non-Plan’ and the houses that populate the beach have developed through improvisation and bodge. This scheme develops this tradition in a way that responds to the drama and harshness of the landscape. El Ray is part of a group of five beach houses located immediately to the east of the huge Dungeness A power station. The original house consisted of a 19th century railway carriage with flimsy lean tos to the north and south. It was in extremely poor condition and too small to accommodate our clients and their growing family. We were asked by our clients to increase the accommodation area by approximately 50%, and dramatically improve the environmental performance of the house. The new house incorp... More

Room for London

Design Competition was hosted by Living Architecture and Artangel in association with the Southbank Centre and the London 2012 Festival. The room is set to function as a hotel room, and the size can not exceed 42 sqm.It will sit on the top of Queen Elizabeth Hall . •A room for London is proposed to be a small living space on the roof of Queen Elizabeth Hall. It will be the interesting point which has the magnificent view connecting to the context of London, like London Eye and Water Loo Bridge. •Diagram: Although it sits on the Roof top, it is lifted up to the higher level above the roof to get the higher view and at the same time leave the space under the room available for connecting to the M&E and services from the existing serv... A New Skyscraper Symbol for the Copenhagen Harbor

We envision this skyscraper to be placed at the Harbor of Copenhagen, Denmark. There is a strong connection between Copenhagen and the surrounding sea. The city was historically a trade hub of north Europe. With The Sound Sea (a strait between the Kattegat and the Baltic Sea) cutting through the city like a wedge, the inhabitants of Copenhagen seems to embrace a mixture churches, trade houses, dwellings, and shipyards. That was up until recently. As the global shipping corporation Mearsk is moving its facilities out, numerous housing and office projects are moving in. Though many Copenhageners wish to engage in the arising housing opportunities on the former shipyards islands, extensive city planning has to happen first. We suggest this p... More

Kurreki House

Seal Rocks is a small, unique village, many existing dwellings are basic weatherbeaten fishing shacks, now mostly used for holidays. Thomas road, was developed later and the last 10 blocks in the street only became available in 2003. The intention was to build an uncomplicated holiday house, which could also be let out for rental income. The existing original cottages are slowly being lost as properties change hands, so the approach was to build in a way that retains the language of the existing built forms of Seal Rocks and to be respectful of context. There is a gentle rise on the site to the rear and an outlook to the bush, front and rear. The Rural Fire Service placed a 10m setback to the rear, enforced a fire fence and dictated... More

Carbon Neutral Faculty building

Green Lighthouse, Denmark’s first CO2 neutral public building, demonstrates that sustainable design is not a question of stuffing the building with brazen, expensive high-tech gadgets, but that it starts with good old fashioned common sense. In fact, 75% of the reduction of the energy consumption is the direct consequence of architectural design. To achieve carbon neutrality, many green design features were incorporated to reduce energy use and provide a holistic and healthy indoor environment for students and faculty. The building itself was oriented to maximize its solar resources, while windows and doors are recessed and covered with automatic solar shades to minimise direct solar heat gain inside the building. Plentiful daylight and... More
