The project came about with the development of a large residential block close to the Elwood foreshore and Port Philip Bay. The brief simply requested a spacious apartment product that was cutting edge and contemporary, but subtle both inside and out. The concept of a large apartment resulted in six single level dwellings, each with the proportions of a small house. The apartments are low maintenance, functionally adaptable to appeal to a range of potential residents, and highly sustainable. Most likely as the result of a generational ebb and flow in our cultural relationship to our collective history; a youthful break with our past replaced with a mature revaluation. The project consists of alterations and additions to an existing inner-city two-storey Victorian terrace house built on an exceptionally long and narrow site (ratio 1:8.5). The client's brief was to design a new fourbedroom residence by refurbishing the original two-storey terrace and demolishing a shamble of fibro and corrugated metal clad lean-tos, and an enormous metal shed which was formerly used as Christmas decorations factory. The site is closely bounded by residential units to the south-west and the Piano Factory warehouse apartment conversion to the north. The Palazzo Grassi is situated in Venice (Italy) and inaugurated in 2006 and 2009. Palazzo Grassi and Punta della Dogana are the two contemporary art museums of the Pinault Collection in Venice. The building, where personal and collective exhibitions are shown, has been renovated by the Japanese architect Tadao Ando. Palazzo Grassi aims to share with the public the knowledge and love for contemporary art through the extraordinary Pinault Collection and to strengthen the priviledged relationship the institution has developed with artists, especially thanks to works specifically conceived for its exhibition spaces.
