Characterized by clean lines, sheer glass walls, and sculptural sun shades, this sharply-detailed house offers an intriguing counterpoint to the tropical ambiance of its forest-like setting. The clients requested a spacious modern house that expressed its appreciation for outdoor living. An open plan and practical glass and steel house that lived out onto the garden was of utmost importance to them. The site is situated in a private game reserve/ eco estate. As the site sloped towards the street terraces were built with gabions, creating a feeling of enclosure towards the north side, with the Highveld savannah beyond it where game roams. Using a mix of raw timbers and chunky, native stones, Otto developed a concept that responded to the client’s specific wishes.“The materials are intrinsic to the area, and it’s still a bit of an Alpine feel that just seems to make sense there,” says Otto. “The client wanted lots of views, and indoor/outdoor living was also a component. An old gas station on the boundaries of the city to distribute fuel after a long journey or for who had to leave for somewhere. A skinny architecture, transformed into a macro advertising signs. Still performing its function as a distributor, no more fuel, but of poetry and emotions. The renovated building is located in the city of Reggio Emilia, on the main traffic street of the city, in a residential area. This area has the connotation of commercial axis, over time has become an urban fabric for the relationship between citizens.
