'China's hidden century' at the British Museum

The resilience and innovation of 19th-century China is the subject of a major new exhibition at the British Museum, designed by the exhibition and graphic design team at Nissen Richards Studio. ‘China’s hidden century’ focuses on the tumultuous period between 1796 and 1912, which led to the end of over 2,000 years of Qing dynastic rule and paved the way for the modern Chinese republic. The exhibition reveals a period of turmoil, but also of great innovation and creativity, driven by political, cultural and technological change. In the shadow of these events lie the stories of remarkable individuals – at court, in the military, in booming cosmopolitan cities and on the global stage – through which the period is... More

Museum of the Mind

This renewed museum is all about the wonder and versatility of the human mind. Science, history of healthcare, philosophy, art and personal stories are woven together in an attempt to get a grip on this invisible piece of humanity. On your mind and that of the other. Because what is the mind really? And where is it located? In your body or out of it? Can you influence your mind and how do you keep it healthy? The visit is a quest, which ends with a call to sign the Universal Declaration of the Open Mind. Thijs Wolzak Stories that stimulate These stories are presented with a lot of images and with the help of expressive forms. For example, there is an installation of hands pointing at you. Stigmatizing terms from different times are p... More

Beezantium

What appears as a small, wooden building on the outside transforms into a thriving beehive on the inside through integrated architecture and scenography. Gigantic honeycombs made from a material mimicking wax split the interior into different sections. Two large cells resemble a queen larva’s gestation cell. In these cells, you can lounge, listen to stories, and consider new perspectives about nature and its preservation as your knowledge expands. Supper organism In contrast with our individualistic society, the honeybees’ world depends on collectivity. Individual bees fulfil the same role as collaborating cells in a human’s body: the colony is a super organism. Much in the same way, the information embedded in each of t... More
