House Russel

Set at the edge of a watercourse below the Harold Porter Botanical Garden, this modest new timber framed holiday house attempts to make the most of its natural surroundings in an uncomplicated way. Damian Schumann The house is positioned to the northeast of the site, screening off the neighbours and opening up towards the wetland on the western side.  Damian Schumann The long axis is orientated north-south towards a dramatic kloof in the mountains beyond. A large, glazed gable end and a clerestory window in the kitchen make the view part of the inhabitants’ everyday routine. By lifting the building off the ground, vegetation and wildlife is allowed to live right up to and under the building’s edge, while intimat... More

Hotel Radisson Collection Magdalena Plaza 5*

Bringing back the palm trees: an elegant new hotel and public square in the heart of Seville Borgos Pieper has completed a new five-star Radisson Collection hotel and transformed Plaza de la Magdalena in the historic centre of Seville. The LEED Gold project has entirely reinvented two buildings, which together define the western edge of the square: ‘Magdalena’, a former 1960s glass-fronted department store, and ‘Rioja’, a smaller office building bordering Calle Rioja. Magdalena had once been the site of the Hotel Paris, an ornate hotel fronted by palm trees – the fashionable place to be seen at the end of the nineteenth century. The design seeks to restore a some of this lost glamour, creating a stylish new de... More

Wanstead

Rees Architects designed the extension and refurbishment to this Victorian terrace house in Wanstead, London. We were also responsible for planning, building regulations, and bespoke joinery for the build. This project involved an extension to the rear of the property and updating the décor of the ground floor to create a cohesive space for the owners who love entertaining and welcoming friends and family into their home and garden. The property is in a conservation area so we took this into consideration when proposing updates to the structure and layout, all of which were successfully approved without need for modification to our plan. Chris Snook For this extension, we retained as much of the brickwork as we could from the w... More

Leytonstone Loft

Answering a brief calling to create a relaxing retreat for the parents where they can spend time together, our studio set out to use every inch of space purposefully and intentionally. We considered how to maximise everything to its full potential from space, storage, light, views and flow - while also considering materiality, acoustics, and tactility.  Chris Snook In its current form, the owners loved the open-plan living space of the ground floor, and as it is a narrow house, they didn't want to lose space by adding something else. The staircase is directly connected to the kitchen on the ground floor and as this is the only practical place for it, this posed as an issue for fire regulations. To resolve this, we fitted a discre... More

Artists House

We were approached in 2018 to create designs for the refurbishment of a double fronted Grade 11 Listed Georgian Crescent House in South London. The brief was to reinterpret the internal layout of the house for a growing creative family. Traditionally the kitchen was located in the ancillary spaces on the lower ground floor, however these had a poorer quality of natural light and a more limited head height. The brief was to bring the kitchen, dining and living spaces up to the principal reception room spaces. Tall floor to ceiling heights, good quality daylight and strong principal views across the crescent and gardens made the upper ground floor spaces much more compatible with modern family living.   Listed building consent was a ch...
