The West Village Apartment completely transforms a worn 1,100 SF unit in an unremarkable 1960s multifamily building. Our gut renovation opens up the highly compartmentalized, low-ceiling space into a generous, free-flowing interior and introduces longer views throughout over its view of Sheridan Square.
Removing almost all non-bearing walls, we reorganized the space and re-inserted only the most necessary separation where privacy was needed. Instead, floor-to-ceiling sliding doors and free-floating millwork soften the boundaries between spaces and allow the ceiling to stretch continuously throughout, making each room feel more spacious than its dimensions would suggest. At the master bed, pivoting translucent glass panels allow for views through the living room and beyond, revealing a sliver of the Empire State Building.
Integrated and efficient storage was prioritized to allow the space to remain clutter-free, while close attention was paid to the detailing of crisp new plaster against the raw exposed structural columns. Warmth, texture, and color were introduced through solid end-grain parquet flooring, rift white oak cabinetry, forest green doors, misty ceramic tile, and contrasting slabs of terrazzo and schist.
