Vacation Apartment in Neapoli

Plaini and Karahalios Architects as Architects

The apartment is part of a ‘70s building located in a central neighborhood of Athens. What initially was a one bedroom permanent residence was transformed into an occasional use apartment for the needs of a family of five. The result is a spatial and conceptual reconfiguration.

The private functions are accomodated as a typical bedroom for the couple and a semi-public room with bunker beds for the three children. The latter area coexists with the adjacent living room. The kitchen space is limited to the absolute necessary while the bathroom gained a larger footprint, reflecting the contemporary condition of short-term living.

The entrace to the apartment is realised through a threshold covered in oak panels. It serves as a pause of pace and feeling from the exterior world and an introduction to the wooden floor, the predominant material of the previous condition.

The dining area is the epicenter of the project, a pivotal point of transition and concentration. It is situated at the beginning of an axis, which transcends the corridor with its storage units and is concluded within the bedroom.

The axis is underlined spatially by the lowered ceiling and materialized by the use of green color on all surfaces. In symbolic terms, the furniture of the dining area is a fragment of Athenian history, an art deco object standing as a centerpiece.
