SunHouse; Energy producing nursery

SunHouse, - Energy producing nursery

Christensen & Co Architects as Architects

The nursery is built on 'Active House' principles and is yet another example of how considered architectural design and integrated energy technologies is the recipe for truly sustainable architecture. Due to the geometry, position of windows and a range of state of the art green technologies, this will be the first nursery in the world that actually produces energy. In fact, the building will have paid back its complete CO2 footprint including construction within 40 years.

The outdoor areas are planted to represent the various landscapes of Denmark, including a woodland area and a sandy zone to symbolize the coastline. It has also been designed to educate its young users about protecting the environment. On site greenhouses where staff and children can grow plants and touch-screen TVs that will allow the children to monitor the centre’s performance.

Anders Borgen, Chairman of Technical and Environmental Administration in the Municipality of Hørsholm states: "I am thrilled that Hørsholm is going to have a day care facility that have such strong green credentials. As a municipality we demonstrate that the climate and environment is a top priority of ours and that a kindergarten is an excellent example of how the Active House principles can be applied. I am convinced that Hørsholm with this new institution will create much interest and curiosity from both experts and other local authorities in Denmark and abroad".

The nursery opened in May 2011.
