Originally designed in 1996 by Charles Haertling, after half a century this stunning 2,000 sf home was in need of a renovation; some additional space; and many interior upgrades. RKD architects was honored to be selected. This was a balance of integrating our sculptural vision with that of Haertling's, while responding to the vision of our clients- a balance we took very seriously. We love this project, the clients do, and we hope that Haertling would have as well.
The original home was a brutalist masterpiece in need of a complete renovation and the addition of a couple hundred square feet. However, the true challenge was how to respect the existing sculpture while creating a new piece of architecture that stood on its own two feet without either mimicking or ignoring the existing homes artistic expression.
