Portal and Pavilion

SAU | Studio Arquitetura Urbanismo as Architects

The architectural ensemble is born using prefabricated components in its structure and adopts a rationalized construction approach. To span the main opening, the Portal relies on two recessed metal beams, resulting in a loose, horizontal flat roof with a blade-like appearance, very thin (15cm at its edges), and supported by only eight points, erected in concrete piers molded on-site. This roof gradually dissolves, transforming into a metal pergola that extends the structural modulation cantilevering towards the highway at the entrance of the development, as a welcoming gesture.

The Event Pavilion is located on two different levels, with a 1.5m difference between them, following the natural slope of the terrain, and its core of services and administration is structured in concrete. On the lower level, the floor plan is open and flexible. This building is surrounded by a "loggia" that serves as a gentle link between the interior and exterior, with 3m of open and shaded space, aiding in thermal protection against the region's high temperatures. It combines the use of precast concrete lattices and wooden fins as sunshades for different sun angles throughout the day, traditional elements of Brazilian architecture. This covered loggia allows for great flexibility in the use of the pavilion. The flexible section of the Pavilion is entirely constructed using an economical modular system of slender metal components (5.0 x 3.25 meters) and a lightweight roof. The pavilion was designed to be entirely accessible to everyone, with a generous ramp and level floors.

The panoramic views from this loggia open up to a lush natural landscape, including an orchard, a children's playground, small plazas for relaxation and gatherings, and a soccer field.

What was the brief?
With the primary aim of conveying an architectural language that contributes to shaping the identity of this company's developments in Piratininga, the architecture is designed with simple lines, embracing a welcoming atmosphere.

What were the key challenges?
The very limited budget and the extreme high average temperatures of the region.

What materials did you choose and why?
With an extremely limited budget, the proposal utilizes materials in their natural form: wood, steel, concrete, and glass. Concrete and steel make up the building's framework. A light and slender roof covers the Pavilion.
