Oostpoort blok 7

Hollands Zicht as Architects

The assignment involved a substantial construction program for the plot behind the existing HEMA in Amsterdam East, 30 apartments and 1000m2 of commercial space. Hollands Zicht found the solution in a compact plan, a gradual transition from the modest existing building block on Linnaeusstraat to a face on the square. A monolith block has been hollowed out and cut for the benefit of light, air and [outside]space.

The location consists of contrasts. The open side with a view over the Ringvaart is the south side, the side with the shopping streets is the north side. The assignment consisted of the search for the realization of high-quality homes and a pleasant inner area. A building block sloping from north to south turned out to be the solution. The sunlight penetrates deep into the block over the low side of the building. An extra wide gallery in front of the houses on the north side gives the houses a generous entrance and a sunny outdoor space, the zoning is indicated by plants. The inner area has a pleasant and natural look with the wooden structures and a communal garden.

A gradual transition from the existing building meant a smooth line from the highest to the lowest point in the building block. The extra height under the sloping roof surfaces has been assigned to the living spaces below and gives these homes on the top floors something special, extra high living spaces or a sheltered and sunny roof terrace.
