Notan House

Akb Architects as Architects

This house was re-built to accentuate a relationship between its interior and the majestic, towering trees of its garden landscape. A third story addition captures views of the dense tree line evoking an experience that is distinctly removed from the urban street-front.

Built within the perimeter of the house’s existing footprint, an emphasis on light is used to channel views and sculpt interior space. A large sky-lit atrium from third floor to basement contains a feature stair and filters natural light onto each level. A second void brings natural light into a third floor shower through a translucent glass partition and continues down into a second floor washroom, highlighting a freestanding bathtub.

Cove lighting integrated into handrails, ceiling reveals and walls highlight the architectural interior by night. A restrained material palette and minimal furnishings contribute to a serene experience of the interior while large bands of windows, stone and brick define the exterior.
