McDonald's Kiara Artha

Aaksen Responsible Aarchitecture as Architects

Sitting amidst a newly open park in the heart of Bandung, Indonesia, McDonald’s Kiara Artha opens an unlimited boundary for people to experience the rare presence of open space in a bustling city. Merging with natural surroundings, the façade uses composite timber in a boxy shape where the bold geometry speaks as a standalone building, that shows direct functions of the buildings itself.

The use of glass around the wall corner gives a depth of experience for the customer from inside-out, both inviting customers to come, while also gives a sightseeing for the customer inside the store where people do sports activities such as jogging, running, and biking around the street as it becomes the main spot as a sport track. At the backside of the store, a widely-open balcony connects directly to the center of the park, where unlimited views to the ponds and fountains are offered.

Minimizing the wall boundaries, McDonald’s Kiara Artha has invited people visually, functionally, while gives see-through experience from inside-out; bringing the natural environment, natural sunlight and breeze, and the spirit of sports activities inside the space. The environment not only sits as a merely background, but the dynamic experience that allows people within the space to enjoy.

The building has east-facing façade, where the use of glass will capture only the morning sun inside the building. The backside of the building, where the verandah as outdoor seating area is placed, acts as a buffer from evening sun at the west area. In which, verandah is cooling down the heat especially in the tropical area. Standardized interior guidelines also play important roles to maintain consistency and effectiveness of circulation, seating capacity and user ergonomics at the store, while also having different uniqueness related to the context of people and place in Kiara Artha park, Bandung.
