Loft Turia

Quadrat Estudio as Architects

We are faced with diaphanous, dark office space with a double height and a challenge: to turn it into a house with spatial and luminous quality.

The original layout consisted of a space on two floors: a main floor and a small loft in the first floor, accessed by a staircase located at the entrance. Only had a closed space on the ground floor with a small toilet. From the loft there was an access to the terrace with a second staircase.

The intervention involves placing the kitchen in the entrance area, modifying the position of the original staircase, the living-dining room  in the double height and a room on the upper floor.

Structure Extension

It is decided to extend the loft and make a new staircase to gain maximum space and to be able to accommodate in addition to the bed, a dressing room and a bathroom. The process of the enlargement is carried out by a simple and light metallic structure:

1.- The original stairwell is closed with metal tubular 120/60/3 welded to the beam of the upper  floor. In the dividing wall there is a continuous metallic L 60/60/4  anchored with chemical blocks. On this L the tubular are welded.

2.For the front extension, we placed a new beam IPE 220 welded to two metal pillars of the building. Finally, tubular 120/60/3 are welded  to the new beam and to the original beam of the loft.

In both cases, OSB 19 mm wooden boards are placed on top of the metallic tubular, on which the self-leveling mortar is poured, which will serve as the base for the continuous cementitious pavement.

Luminosity

To achieve a greater luminosity in the space, the white colour gains prominence and all the metallic elements of the stairs and railings are lightened, being reduced to the minimum expression. The two closed spaces that appear on the ground floor and the first floor are covered with mirrors in a way that reflects the light that enters through the large window illuminating the background space.

The continuous cementitious soil gives unity to space, increasing the spatial relationship between its parts.
