LifeWorks Office

Lighting the way for workplace wellbeing

Fluxwerx as Interior Lighting

Located at the center of Toronto’s bustling business core sits LifeWorks’ new state-of-the-art headquarters—a 500,000 sq/ft office space in the recently completed York 16 office tower—designed for wellbeing, performance, and comfort.

As a global leader in technology-led wellbeing programs, Lifeworks provides mental, physical, social, and financial support to over 24,000 organizations globally. The design team—D. A. Derksen Consulting Inc. and Black Bee Studio—recognized the importance of creating a welcoming environment that reflects the client’s commitment to health and wellbeing, while contributing to the office tower’s LEED® Platinum and WELL Building Standards targets.

One of the key elements to achieving their goal was high-performance, glare-free lighting across the office’s various work environments.

"To support the employees of LifeWorks and its clients, it was important to promote the feeling of wellness through natural-looking materials such as wood, stone, and biophilia. We then wanted to layer interesting light fixtures that emulated daylighting, while integrating seamlessly with the building’s architecture."
Liz Rogers, Principal Designer, Black Bee Studio Inc.

The project’s lighting consultant, Nicholas Kohut at TPL Lighting, recommended pairing the Fluxwerx Portal family with the Profile Mini. Together, the luminaries provide maximum light coverage and light levels across the office’s interior spaces, so whether occupying a meeting room, a collaborative breakout space, or a quiet corner, staff do not have to worry about too much or too little light.

Delivering over 40 foot candles on average while using less than 0.4 W/ft2, Profile Mini outperforms far bigger suspended linear  luminaires, allowing the design team to maximize the placement of each fixture, without compromising either performance or aesthetics.

Portal Surface and Recessed fixtures, in 5.5” diameter and an elegant white powder coat finish, offer a minimalist aesthetic to integrate with the interior architecture. Both fixtures deliver lighting uniformity and visual comfort with efficacies up to 150 lm/w, a selected distribution of 100 dn, 3500K color temperature, and 90 CRI for exceptional optical control and efficacies.

With occupants able to take independent control of the light distributions to suit their needs, Fluxwerx luminaries contribute to a friendly, welcoming working environment—the perfect representation of LifeWorks’ wellbeing-first approach.
