In Hvide Sande (Denmark) rough waves and winds are commonplace. The Langsand Langs Vand holiday homes are therefore customized to be able to withstand the harsh weather conditions in Western Jutland. The homes are clad with robust facade boards that, when tested before construction, already proofed to be weather resistant and thus very effective.
Langsand Langs Vand has been designed to match the location. Christian Bay-Jørgensen, architect and co-owner of Bay Arch: “The architecture was inspired by the maritime atmosphere of Hvide Sande, with its fishing houses, boat motives and the surrounding buildings. With the new established canals, the holiday homes are located on the shore and at the same time in the middle of the isthmus.”
Contrasting facade cladding
“In addition to weather resistance, the visual expression was also paramount. We have created a facade with structure and colour play that refers to the nuances we know from the area of Hvide Sane”, says Christian Bay-Jørgensen. “From the different coloured houses in the harbour to the calm earth colours of the ‘lock houses’. With this palette of colours, we have created a variation of the architecture that makes the individual houses get its own identity.”That contrasting look and feel is created with the robust stone wool facade boards of Rockpanel. The boards that are made of sustainable material were delivered in two different designs: Rockpanel Colours, in two different colours, and Rockpanel Naturel, which takes on an organic, reddish-brown look when exposed to the elements.
Easy to install and low maintenance cladding
The Rockpanel facade boards were supplied in custom sizes, saving time and making installation more efficient. “Another advantage was the fact that they are light in weight and can easily be handled by one man”, says Søren Kjærsgaard, project manager and co-owner of Klittens Tømrer, the company responsible for installation. “Especially because the construction goes up in height and therefore required scaffolding and a lot of lifting.” In addition, the facade boards require little maintenance. This to the satisfaction of the new holiday home owners.
Facade boards pass weather resistance test
As the holiday homes are seriously exposed to the harsh weather conditions of West Jutland, the facade boards were tested for weather resistance. Palle Ramsdal, project consultant at Rockpanel, explains: “Our facade boards are approved for use in coastal areas, and the test gave us the opportunity to demonstrate their resistance to harsh weather conditions. We installed some facade boards in an environment that was exposed to the elements and left them there for a year. This allowed us to assess how the panels would respond to their current environment.”
