GREEN CAVE

TallerDE2 Architects as Architects

Green Cave is an Ephemeral Urban Garden as a result of the Biannual International Competition for Urban Gardens in Bilbao, Spain. The competition was submitted in January 2011, and the Jury Selected it by March; it was fully defined till May, when it had to beassembled and realizedin 4 days; the Urban Gardens Exhibition lasted till July, when it was unassembled and removed within 12 hours. Nowadays, each piece, material and the 950 plants forming the Garden continue their life span and organic life in different locations in the north of Spain.

Green cave is an incredible garden of silver and crimson. Its beauty lies in its ‘natural peculiarity’. The silver colour and elevated position of the chosen plant species -TillandsiaUsneoides (Spanish Moss)- invite the visitor to explore this hanging garden of tangled herbaceous plants. The floor surface, often understood as principal, changes becoming the background and the main feature is located above our heads. There, the fascinating Epiphyte colonizes an assembled, lightweight and reversible infrastructure. The result is a cavernous and soft covering, a Green Caveof silver domes that contrasts with the intense and warm crimson colour of the ‘red carpet’.
