Fusao Restaurant

João Tiago Aguiar, arquitectos as Architects

The programme initially given to us required the creation of a restaurant exclusively dedicated to Japanese cuisine inside a 5 star hotel, contemporary and innovative. The main concept of the project was to give the purity, quietness and cleanness that usually characterize this type of restaurant but at the same time with a contemporary language and using noble and luxurious materials.

In that sense, we’ve tried to organize the space in a clear way, and to make people feel they are in a different environment immediately after they get to the entrance. The space is mainly divided by two great gestures: one is the counter made all in white marble stone, 8cm thick, that cuts the whole space and folds ant turns creating different areas for you to seat and enjoy either the Sushi and Sashimi or the Tepan-Yaki; the other is a great loose concrete block lifted from the ground and not touching the ceiling with a stream of light all around both below and on top that closes and opens and has all the private rooms where you can appreciate all the food in a more private, quiet and relaxed environment.

The ceiling was powdered by small little boxes that work as skylights, allowing the natural light to come in from various points as well.

Besides all that, we’ve also created two winter gardens, both in small white river stone, in order to give it a more oriental atmosphere, one of them (by the entrance) being reinforced with the use of big rain forest stone panels (1,4x2,7m size) imported from the Amazonia forest in Brazil.
