Set in a pristine open grassland, this project aims to convert a turn of the century working barn into a three bedroom vacation home for a couple seeking refuge from the city. The barn was restored with the intention of retaining much of its original form and character while at the same time developing newer industrial insertions of steel and plywood to contrast with the existing weathered structure. Large diameter raw steel pipes are used as simple utilitarian fire boxes and the old flooring boards of the barn will be left exposed as the finished floor. In many areas the original wood studs are salvaged and rebuilt as exposed stud walls. A blend of preservation and intervention, this project updates an aging barn without losing sight of its history.
