From a typological point of view, an opera house usually tends to be a landmark, a “singular object” within a certain urban context. Thus, the sustainability of this kind of “big intervention” is based on the necessity of combining the outstanding character of the building itself with its environmental potential in generating and/or implementing urban quality of life within the city.
The real goal then is to give the city an added value for improving the quality and livability of its public and collective spaces. Then, we conceive the Busan Opera House not merely as a “singular object”, but rather as a “spatial system”, able to match properly the programmatic and typological requirements scheduled by the competition, but also able to generate relations within the city, due to the creation of new public and collective space open and freely accessible to all people.
