Launched as part of British Land's new flexible workspace brand, Storey, this furniture warehouse building located between Shoreditch and Broadgate. Appold Studios is a 2018 AJ Retrofit Awards finalist.
The building has provided the client with a successful modelto bring to the market – so much so that a number of new assets are being developed by Storey off the back of this project. The development and completion of AppoldStudios has propelled Storey into the Flexible workplace market; providing SME’s with a well-designed, flexible and productive office environment.HUT have subsequently been invited to do further work for British Land’s Storey brand including International House in Ealing.
The scheme is a flexible workspace specifically designed for the needs of the occupier whether it’s a private office, shared desks and spaces, access to meeting roomsor concealed phonebooths. It’s secure and private whilst remaining as a dynamic creative community for people to work in.
The space can be personalised by each occupier whether it’s to change the office layout, applying their own branding or the addition or removal of office furniture. Thedesign of the building and the purpose of the scheme is to create a friendly, open atmosphere to maximise individuals to focus solely on their business and wellbeing.Additional shared facilities help to increase the attraction of the space for the occupier. New bike storage and shared shower facilities were integrated alongside extraWC’s bringing the building up to modern standards. There’s additional break out spaces, a kitchen and a terrace space which is a rarity in shared office spaces in London.
The flexible set up of the space offers different spots for people to work in depending on mood or formality. These include stand-up ledges, kitchen tables and comfortablesofas – all of which have been proven to increase well-being and productivity. Lush planting is distributed throughout the building improving air quality and continuingthe calm environment.
HUT has used a mixture of economical and bespoke materials to create a unique and desirable offering to the commercial workspace market in this area. Wall finisheshave been stripped back to reveal features of the original building. Burnt larch cladding wraps the main stair core with hanging concrete lights which animate the buildingat street level.Furniture selection and bespoke joinery design ensure that the common parts ‘work hard’ to fulfil as many work place spaces as possible and provides a high level of flexibility for users.
