THE SITUATION
The aim of this project was to improve and expand the leisure products and services that Abbey Stadium already had to offer. Creating an outdoor training space that could be used for multiple training types, with the option to have multiple classes running at a time. Most importantly, the outdoor facility needed to allow for training outside 365 days a year.
THE SOLUTION
In order to achieve this, the design was based around two 20ft containers. The containers would not only provide storage for the gym equipment but also divide the space into two distinct areas that can either be used simultaneously for separate classes or at one time for a larger class.
To ensure the British weather wouldn't impact outdoor activity, a unique feature was included that would prove to really set it apart from other outdoor training areas. A PVC dome canopy that provides shelter from the elements to the 10m x 6m (32.8' x 19.7') CrossFit and functional training area. The lighting provided underneath the canopy also means training can continue long into the night. The canopy also provides a great branding opportunity for the company and for the training area to be shown with maximum impact.
The first container features a rolling shutter door running its full length that allows for easy access to the custom-designed storage units, holding all the gym equipment for the CrossFit area. The equipment in this container is protected by insulation fitted to the inside of the container and also features indoor lighting.
Underneath the canopy is a freestanding functional training rig, boasting 6 lifting stations, multiple muscle up and suspensions training points, dual height throw targets, two 4m high rope climb sections. This all sits on top of our 32mm (1.25") duraTRAIN® Rubber Fitness Tiles which are just as "at home" outside as they are inside.
The second container includes roller shutter doors on both sides. This container is the key to providing flexibility within this outdoor training space that the brief required. The dual roller shutter entrances make it accessible from both training areas, or mean that one of the roller shutter doors can be closed to separate the training areas. Again, as with the first container, this is fully kitted out with custom storage bays for all small equipment, protected by insulation and fully fitted with lighting.
On the far side of the second container is a circuit training area, zoned using custom manufactured turf with training areas clearly marked and Rubicon’s logo proudly in the centre. Attached to the container is another functional training rig with 2 lifting stations, multiple dual height targets, suspension, and muscle up bars. This rig can be used to base the circuit around or as an addition to the CrossFit training space.
To the side of the containers is a 2 lane 25m long turf track that allows for endless options of sled and plyometric work.
THE RESULT
This project was worked on right from the initial design phase all the way through to manufacture, and delivery & installation, every single element was thought through and provided by Indigo Fitness.
This outdoor training space does not simply provide space for overflow classes but provides the leisure centre with a true destination training space that will open them to additional revenue streams, classes and avenues that were not previously available to them 365 days of the year.
