80 inpatient beds for adult psychiatry

Patrick Schweitzer & Associés Architectes as Architects

The construction of an 80-bed adult psychiatry building at the Guillaume Régnier Hospital Centre in Rennes is a project to create new services that meet demanding specifications in an environment with multiple constraints. The challenge of the project is the integration into an existing site, a strong site, a site composed of a multitude of pavilions with angular shapes and large trees to be preserved. The shape of the building fits into this existing fabric. The architecture consists of three simple elements integrated into the existing slope of the site. Units G04 and G06 are on the same level, one at the "high" north level of the slope and the other at the "low" south level of the slope. The two units are connected by the reception area, which is fully glazed and open on two floors. This hall is overhung by a volume grouping the medical-administrative and therapeutic pole on three floors. Thus, wandering in units G04 and G06 remains possible when the offices close after 5 pm. Access is also controlled thanks to this hierarchy of spaces. The project is taking shape on the west side of the site in order to leave a green space free on the east side. This allows to keep the existing trees on the plot to the East and to create a meeting and arrival area for patients and visitors.
