6 Courtyards House

Noor Khan Design Studio as Architects

When tasked with creating a multigenerational family home in Lahore, Pakistan, inspiration was found in the old walled city of Lahore, where it looked as though a slice of history had been preserved for posterity. A walk through the narrow streets of the old city reveals splendid courtyards that act as nodes within the neighbourhoods, says Khan.

The Six Courtyards House, like the name suggests, has courtyards that are integral to its design. All of them are defined within the boundaries of the house. A purist when it comes to adhering to a modernist aesthetic, Khan‘s design sensibilities are apparent in this house as well, an unornamented articulation of eloquence in concrete and brick, with wood and glass used significantly in the interiors.

A three-storey residence, the house is characterized by well-lit, double-height spaces. The spatial organization includes a basement, which—apart from a movie room, staff quarters and utility spaces—holds two courtyards that create unexpected bright spots; a ground floor that comprises the common areas along with three bedrooms; and a top floor with four more bedrooms and other spaces, including an outdoor seating area and four courtyards. The white palette is accented with a darkly polished wood that offsets it.

The floors of the common areas are made of marble imported from Vietnam, augmenting the pristine white shade used in the house. The bedrooms, on the other hand, have wooden flooring, lending the private areas warmth. A staircase leading to the upper floor is embellished with a skylight overlooking it, dominating the space and drawing the focus away from the stark wall. The use of glass and the open areas suffuse the entire house with light and air, and create links with the outdoors. This is modernism expressed in its purest form.
