All about Letterboxes

Letterboxes are installed on curb sides, at front gates, at entrances, and inside lobbies of residential and commercial buildings to facilitate the delivery of mail and parcels. Sometimes letterboxes are also used to deposit mail and parcels that the letterbox owners want delivery people to pick up and post or deliver. While the main purpose is practical, the aesthetics of letterboxes are important as well to most buyers. Fortunately, from traditional letterboxes to electronic letterboxes, it is possible to find a range of letterbox types and designs to match up with every possible taste and decor.

Traditional letterboxes may be in the form of doorway slots that open into a receptacle inside, metal or wooden boxes mounted on walls, and metal and wooden boxes mounted on posts. The slot or opening usually has a flap for dropping in the mail and parcels, and the box has a door to retrieve these. The flap is spring operated, or gravity operated and prevents rain and snow from getting into the letterbox, and the door usually has a lock to prevent anyone other than the letterbox owner from gaining access to the letterbox. Both traditional types of letterboxes and individual electronic letterboxes are suitable for family homes and residential and commercial buildings where door to door delivery is still prevalent.

Security concerns as well as convenience factors have given rise to letterbox stations in residential and commercial lobbies. These letterbox stations comprise of rows and tiers of individual letterboxes, bearing the numbers or nameplates of the letterbox owners. The letterboxes may be regular or electronically operated.

Electronic letterboxes can alert the letterbox owner by phone message or email every time mail or parcels are delivered into it, and can also notify a delivery service when there is mail that needs to be picked up. In addition to regular mail, electronic letterboxes can be used for deliveries of food, medicine, and other items. The letterbox owner can access the electronic letterbox with a key chip.

Letterboxes have gained popularity through a social game known as letter boxing. Participants go on treasure hunts, following a given set of clues to all the letterboxes on their designated route, and mark their progress in their journal with a letterboxes stamp they find in each letterbox. They also use their own personalized letterboxes stamp to mark their visit by stamping in a journal kept for this purpose in each letterbox. The letterboxes stamp may be handmade, usually carved on a rubber eraser or on linoleum piece, or can be purchased at a crafts store. Many people have installed letterboxes on their properties just in order to participate in the letter boxing game.
