Despite already having a permit for a three-storey apartment building, the client came to us to develop a terrace housing scheme that responded to the site’s gateway location into the Newport Town Centre.
The design scheme drew its inspiration from the arches that were a prominent feature in the existing home on the site. Whilst clearly a more robust form, the use of recycled brick and a reverse gable roof form work to ensure the development responds to the residential character of the secondary street.
The arrangement of the dwellings was heavily influenced by Council’s requirements who opposed a scheme that initially sought to remove driveways and have all dwellings accessed via a shared driveway. As a result, the dwelling footprint was increased whilst maintaining the original architectural language.
The building was setback from Mason Street to open the public realm and create a spillover space for a ground level cafe; whilst ensuring a viewline to the adjoining heritage was improved.
