Founded in 1857, Buena Vista Winery is California’s oldest premium winery. Founded by an eccentric pioneer, Buena Vista played a pivotal role in the establishment of European grapes in Sonoma and the early foundation of Califonia’s wine industry.
In 2011, after decades of neglect, the winery came under new ownership and began a complete restoration to return the historic buildings and landscape to their former glory. Where there was once crumbling asphalt, decomposed granite pathways and intricately patterned cobble act as an elegant counterpoint to the masonry of the landmark winery buildings.
The landscape design is focused on access and education-- seamlessly integrating accessible routes and educational exhibits into the beautiful, sinuous curves of the new landscape design. A series of circular terraces and vortex fountain relate to the themes of Buena Vista’s biodynamic and celestial approaches to viticulture.
