BAUHAUS MUSEUM DESSAU

“INNOVATIVE TREASURE BOXES”

MAURICE HOUBEN ARCHITECTURE as Architects

(Re-)discovering Bauhaus in the central city park of Dessau

The Bauhaus movement has been under pressure of political conflicts, ideological confrontation and cosmopolitan designs, since its establishment in 1919. Due to this tragic and turbulent history, the Bauhaus has fallen into oblivion for a too long period of time. The last decades, architecture has been almost exaggerated, driven by large ambitions, surpassing the functionality of architecture. Due to the change of economics in 2008 a shift to more realistic and functional architecture, like the Bauhaus can be sensed. This creates an unique opportunity to have this almost 100 years young and modern movement of art and architecture be (re-)discovered by a broad audience. Emphasized with the build of a new Bauhaus Museum at its origin, the city of Dessau.

In the heart of Dessau’s cultural network, this new public building has to be turned into an inspiring and creative hotspot. We think this new museum has to be a multidisciplinary setting, in which research, education and experimental design can be combined, resulting into an exciting and innovative combination of exhibitions, workshops and other events. The new Bauhaus museum needs to be a place where a direct relation between the building, visitors, context and the city is realized; a creative catalyst for knowledge, presentation and participation.

The striking so-called "Treasure Boxes" refer symbolically to turbulent history and an exciting new future, because here the special collection items are exhibited and (re)discovered. These outstanding volumes accommodate the exhibition areas of the Dessau Bauhaus Museum and are lifted above ground-level. The treasure boxes are constructed according to a box-in-box principle, which ensures strictly separated climate zones.

By following the Bauhaus philosophy in state of art sustainable techniques a future-oriented building design is created. A concept with a wide range of spatial qualities in which the ideas of the Bauhaus are fully reflected. In a generous, surprising and exciting environment the union of art and design can be exhibited and admired.

After a century of evolvement the Bauhaus of the past, present and future can be (re)-discovered in a truly modern and inspiring “sustainable Gesamtkunstwerk of the 21st century”!
