Located in Brooklyn Heights, Brooklyn, NY, the residence is located in the St. George Tower. The home was originally painted a very sterile white, and due to its northern exposure it read very grey and cold. As such, Claire Hung Design worked with the homeowners to co-create a vision of sophisticated warmth with a blend of contemporary styles and a touch of modernism.
The team of Claire Hung Design started with replacing the floors, doors and trim with warm tones of oak. It was then paired with dark chocolate oak cabinetry with Italian Marble (Macchia Vecchia (backsplash) and Paonazzo (countertop) in the living space.
The biggest challenge was the ceilings. There are large beams throughout with some overlapping in areas. The goal was to refocus the eye on the interior design elements, through millwork and raising the ceilings in the bathrooms. Claire Hung Design opened up the galley kitchen into the living space to expand its footprint by both elongating the countertop into a eat-in peninsula, and connecting the storage space to the kitchen via seamless millwork.
This serene family home is replete with timeless contemporary architectural details and materials. It feels warm and works with the homeowners’ existing mid-century furniture.
