Archello welcomes four jurors to the Archello Awards 2024 program, strengthening the panel that is gearing up to evaluate entries for 75 architecture product and project categories this fall. Read on to learn more about Kris Yao, Dikkie Scipio, Katrine Goldstein and Daniel Illum-Davis:
Kris Yao is the founder of KRIS YAO | ARTECH. He obtained a Bachelor of Architecture from Taiwan’s Tunghai University, and a Master of Architecture from the University of California, Berkeley. Throughout his 40 years of practice, Yao has received numerous awards and recognitions, including the prestigious Honorary Fellowship from the American Institute of Architects in 2014. Yao’s works have been widely published in international architectural magazines and professional journals. He has also taken part in international architectural exhibitions, including the Venice Biennale.
Yao’s architecture integrates function with culture and history, presenting a unique approach that celebrates the spirit of the locality. The AIA praised him as an architect who “demonstrates his humanity with the development of physical elements that hold true to human emotion and conditions, cultural and historical context, and a sense of scale and place. His architecture has a poetic nature, using his native eastern aesthetic and spirituality with a sense of natural light, interplay of surfaces and forms and executing all with a high level of innovation and professionalism.”
Dikkie Scipio is a co-founder of KAAN Architecten. She holds a master’s degree in applied arts, industrial, and interior design from the Royal Academy of Arts in The Hague and afterward qualified as an architect at the Rotterdam Academy of Architecture. Drawing from her comprehensive training, Scipio adeptly leads projects encompassing a wide spectrum, ranging from extensive urban plans and architectural designs to furniture and interior concepts. Her successful international career spans across roles as an urbanist, master planner, architect, and designer. With experience in public infrastructure, museums, and educational establishments, she brings insight and supervises architectural and urban aspects of projects. Her overarching goal is to cultivate innovative, world-class facilities, established through close and collaborative partnerships with clients.
Scipio has led projects such as the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp, Belgium and the Museum Paleis Het Loo in Apeldoorn, Netherlands, which was named Cultural Building of the Year in the inaugural Archello Awards 2023. These projects seamlessly integrate expansion with preservation, showcasing her commitment to respecting existing structures and historical significance. Scipio is also an accomplished writer, esteemed columnist, an international lecturer, and holds roles on several boards and juries. Notably, she delivered lectures at prominent institutions like the University of Antwerp and the BAUHAUS University in Weimar. Her expertise has been recognized through her participation as a jury member at the prestigious European Award for Architectural Heritage Intervention. Since 2019, she has held the position of a professor at the Münster University of Applied Sciences, chairing the Architectural Design department.
Katrine Goldstein is Managing Director and Partner of Norm Architects, a studio founded in 2008 and situated in the heart of Copenhagen. She is responsible for tying together the firm’s many disciplines into one cohesive approach. As managing director, Goldstein works across platforms and geographical borders to ensure that projects are developed and delivered at their full potential. With a background at renowned branding and communication agencies in London and Copenhagen, Goldstein’s previous work with international corporations has instilled in her a deep intuition into the nature of building client relationships and collaborations. At Norm Architects, she leverages her experience and skills to create tailor-made client experiences and project management processes.
Daniel Illum-Davis is partner at Vilhelm Lauritzen Architects, an architectural practice based in Copenhagen, Denmark. Founded in 1922 by its namesake, one of the founding members of Danish Modernism, the practice remains a leading studio, working on a range of projects throughout Denmark and northern Europe.
Since joining the practice in 2013, Illum-Davis has led projects such as the Steno Diabetes Center Copenhagen, which has won international recognition since its completion in 2021, including being named the Archello Awards 2023 Healthcare Building of the Year. He continues to champion the studio’s original ideals for designing inclusive, pragmatic architecture for the masses, inextricably rooted in Scandinavian modernity and functionalism. Illum-Davis grew up in the United Kingdom and earned his bachelor’s degree in architecture from Oxford Brookes University, before moving to Denmark in 2007 and earning his master’s degree in 2012 from the Aarhus School of Architecture.
