General Construction

Duratherm’s detailing and construction is designed for monumental wood window and door systems meant to last the life of the building.  Our products were initially designed for commercial and institutional work, where strength, durability and long-term performance were paramount.  It is this same design and detailing that is used for our residential work - we do not manufacture a separate “residential line” of windows.

We have extensive experience in window and window wall work for projects located in harsh environments, whether it is a corrosive ocean front location with wind blown sand and salt spray, or high elevation locations wide fluctuations of temperature and humidity.  Projects that have used our windows and doors range in location throughout the continental United States, Alaska, Hawaii, Canada, the Caribbean, and Taiwan.

Advantages of our windows and doors include solid hardwood frames without finger joints, solid bronze operating hardware, stainless steel hinging, and heavy commercial grade operating components.  Our large cross section on operable window sash provides rigidity for long term, trouble free operation.  Swing door panels are a full 2¼” thick for stability and long-term durability in high use applications.  Available door operating hardware includes solid bronze or stainless steel ball bearing butt hinges and stainless steel multi point locking systems.  Commercial glazing details with interior removable glass stops and replaceable glazing gaskets provide for easy, quick glass replacement by maintenance staff. Weeped glazing channels conform to all commercial glazing manufacturers specs and ensure long term performance of the glazing system

Performance

Our windows are tested according to the exacting standards of the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) and come with the Energy Star label. This signifies that our products meet strict energy efficiency guidelines as set forth by the EPA and the US Department of Energy.

We performance test our window and door units according to AAMA / WDMA CSA 101/I.S.2/A-440-05 for architectural grade AW PG60 rating.  All units are water tested to a minimum 8lb per square foot test pressure. We have tested our product line for Hurricane/Impact applications at 42psf for a Wind zone 3 / Missile Level D performance class (Test criteria:  ASTM E1996-05 and ASTM E1886-05).

Duratherm’s solid wood frame, with an approximate R value of 1 per inch, out performs all metal frames, even those that include thermal breaks.  Also, wood - unlike metal - produces no condensation, making it an ideal solution for high humidity environments.  For this reason, we have provided our products for many museums where careful control of the interior environment is critical.  Wood windows when coupled with high performance glazing can result in lower life cycle costs due to reduced heat loss through the frame.   Wood is also sustainable and renewable; it requires less energy to produce then any other building product
