Art Institute of Chicago

Serving both as a museum and a school, the Art Institute of Chicago preserves and interprets a renowned collection. Built on the rubble of the Chicago fires in 1879, the Art Institute of Chicago now houses more than 5,000 years' worth of art. To enable further development, the museum undertook its biggest renovation ever, a 264,000-square-foot wing designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Renzo Piano. Renzo Piano Building Workshop architects made light control a central part of the project, creating what New York Times architecture critic Nicolai Ourrossof says gives the views a "soft, ghostlike quality" coming from the white screens at each window (which were custom-built by Hunter Douglas Contract Window Coverings). U.S. Green Building Council - USGBC

In 2008 the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) opened a small office in San Diego, California, to develop a program for the residential building market. In 2009, the team located a space that would satisfy their high expectations for a green workspace. Built in 1979, the office building incorporated many green elements in its original design, including a green roof, 100% day-lit space and operable windows for fresh air. Every decision in the retrofit of the 1,600 square foot space incorporated sustainable measures, practices and materials: the reuse of kitchen cabinets, reduction of construction waste, specification of low-VOC materials, and addition of window coverings that manage heat and light from the sun.
