Dunlop Hub

Designed by Pac Studio with thermal modelling overseen by VIA Architecture, the form of the Hub is based on an architectural shed with a design that mixes practicality with beauty, resulting in an artfully finished building that still allows for the hands-on nature of the business.  Dunlop Builders and Chris Lea For a company that leads the way in terms of sustainable building, it was important for Dunlop Builders to practise what they preach when creating their own headquarters - and material choices contributed greatly to their ability to do so. Well versed in the benefits of Abodo timbers, having built the Cardrona Cabin and other projects using cladding and screening, Dunlop used Vulcan timber extensively for their Hub. The... More

Holy Trinity Avonside

Thee reiteration of Holy Trinity Avonside features Abodo timbers and salvaged materials from the original building. Tennent Brown Architects, who have an extensive architectural portfolio of places of worship, especially in Christchurch, designed the new Holy Trinity Avonside after the original building was destroyed in the 2011 Christchurch earthquakes. Andy Spain The architect’s design references the history of the original building through salvaged timber beams, which were hand stencilled by Benjamin Mountford, as well as rescued and repaired stained-glass windows. The beams are situated near the entrance way, where they align beautifully with the natural rawness and warmth of Vulcan Screening battens, which line the walls... More

Semi Bold

Abodo Vulcan Cladding with a Nero coating complements the existing rendered masonry for this re-imagined semi in Bondi. TFAD Pty Limited A dynamic redesign and well considered extension brings light and space to this Bondi property, with Abodo’s Vulcan timber cladding in Protector - Nero chosen to elevate the drama of the existing rendered walls while also providing a degree of complementary contrast to the home’s exterior. Letting light into internal spaces is a common problem for semi detached homes - as is providing enough space for modern families. This Bondi semi suffered from both, prompting its owners to engage architects LiteraTrotta Architecture, who redesigned the interior to bring a suite of new rooms in the fo... More

Elanora Residence

When it came to the timber cladding and screening for this home close to the ocean on the Sunshine Coast, Designers Reitsma & Associates were able to tick many boxes with the specification of Abodo Vulcan timber, in terms of durability, span length and waste reduction. Reitsma & Associates As its name suggests, the Sunshine Coast receives around 300 days of sunshine each year. With this exposure, plus a location close to the beach, Reitsma had to be conscious that exterior applications for this home could withstand anything the environment threw at them. Add to this the homeowner’s wish for a low maintenance timber that could flow through from the exterior to the interior, and the product needed to perform in many differ... More

Cohaus

The concept of Cohaus is not a new one, but for modern city-dwellers, it may feel like a breath of fresh air. Residents of the twenty units share facilities and therefore also expenses - electricity, internet, laundry facilities and even cars - and, for those with families, the children run free together in the courtyard and gardens. Adam Luxton In the construction of the terraced and apartment buildings, the designers were careful to choose products and materials that encapsulated the sustainability ethos of the project. This included using Abodo Vulcan vertical weatherboards on the Courtyard block and Abodo Vulcan Decking for the elevated decks on the Surrey block. The decking product is also used for the external staircase for the... More

Lakehouse Luxe

The bold architectural forms of this lakeside holiday home in Taupo coexist cohesively with the natural and built environment due to the use of Abodo Vulcan Nero weatherboards, while indoors a warm atmosphere is created with Vulcan Panelling in Protector - Straw. Matt Westerman Lake Taupo is the largest freshwater lake in Australasia, around the size of Singapore, and is known for its deep blue waters and much-loved for the leisure activities it offers visitors. For the owners of this holiday home, being able to vacation just a short amble from the shores of the lake made this an appealing spot to build, providing possibilities for uninterrupted views. Matt Westerman The land had existing plans in place, however, which meant the... More

Cass Bay House

The beautiful surroundings of this coastal home called for a rethink of the floorplan and a refresh of the exterior using Abodo timbers, while a new sculptural entrance adds momentum to the moment of arrival. Caption Despite being just twenty metres from the water, this home had little in the way of physical connections to the outdoors. The homeowners called on Max Capocaccia of MC Architects to help them solve this problem with a reshuffle of the interior spaces, but the brief soon developed further, says the architect. For the entranceway, Corten steel angles over the front door, alongside a folded facade of Neolith tiles. This combination of gritty materials is juxtaposed against the softer tones of the boxy garage form, which is... More

Historic Aitken House

Sensitivity is paramount when creating a new structure in an area of ancient historic significance, like this village in the Southern Borders of Scotland. An external material palette of stone and Abodo Vulcan timber weatherboards were carefully chosen to help this new building merge with its neighbours. Caption Built for a client in their later years, who wished to downsize and live closer to the amenities of the village, this home was positioned on the site of a series of brick sheds in the backyard of an existing building near the village centre. Caption When it came to material choices, the house closely follows that of its neighbours, with a lower level formed out of local stone and a darkly textured slate roof. Abodo Vulca... More

Vulcan Charred Extension

Abodo Vulcan Charred timber weatherboards add a sense of contrast and contemporary texture to the additional wing for an existing home in Jack’s Point, Queenstown. Caption For this project, architects Kerr Ritchie were originally called upon to add sun shading to a schist-clad home in Jack’s Point. The success of this addition, which used Abodo Vulcan Charred timber, inspired the homeowners to expand their brief to encompass a new wing on the neighbouring section, containing a guest apartment, office space, wine cellar, pool, games room and additional garaging. Caption The sun shading reaches across the brow of the original home and connects the two both physically and in terms of materiality. The new form then exten... More

Minyama House

With such a beautiful outlook, the design of this home called for expansive areas of glazing and for a natural material palette that allowed it to merge with the landscape. The clients requested the use of natural timber throughout the home, and Abodo was suggested to architects Morriarchi Architecture by contractors Gray Construction Group, who had worked with the eco-timber products on a previous project. Caption On the exterior walls, the Abodo Vulcan weatherboards are finished with Protector Oil Teak, chosen for both longevity and visual warmth. This material is also used for the entry door, gatehouse door and master bedroom balcony hood, creating a sense of consistency throughout the property. All interior spaces have barn-style d... More

Heron House

The homeowner’s brief was for a small, fun, carefully crafted home. Additionally, it had to be materially interesting and cost effective. For the home’s exterior, Architects Pac Studio chose Abodo Vulcan vertical timber cladding alongside Zincalume® alloy. Combining these elements gives the building the feeling like it has been there forever - a found object, or vernacular shed, weathered by a life well lived. Caption Caption While the Vulcan timber cladding was chosen for its durability, stability and eco credentials (being sourced locally from FSC® certified forests), the Sioo:x Natural Wood Coating was chosen for its muted, weathered finish. SRG House

Many architects have contributed to the history of this Sydney home, from its original owner and namesake Sir Roy Grounds to the architect who conceived of it in 1972, Stuart Whitelaw, and finally current homeowner and architect Conrad Johnston of Fox Johnston, who has given the home a new lease on life using Abodo eco timbers and an extended floor plan. Choosing Abodo Vulcan WB10 145x20 vertical boards with a Protector Oil Walnut stain in the place of cedar meant creating a similar look to the original cladding but without the pitfalls of stability issues and frequent maintenance. Vulcan Cladding is created using thermally modified New Zealand-grown timber, which along with its patented vertical grain construction gives an enhanced level... More

Form 001

Aside from having multiple uses, this pre-fabricated structure by Alberta-based pre-form is designed to fit within many different environments, from a suburban backyard to the depths of a forest, in part due to the subtlety of the Abodo Vulcan Cladding in Nero deep black finish. Vulcan has also been used for the decking for Form 001, giving a cohesive look to the building. Pre-form is looking to expand their offerings with some ideas in the pipeline for larger living spaces and self-contained structures as well as a greenhouse and sauna, all of which will be created using Abodo eco-timber products. Te Hononga Hundertwasser Memorial Park

This new facility in Kawakawa continues the environmental and artistic legacy of late Austrian artist, architect and dedicated local resident Friedensreich Hundertwasser with a building that uses eco-friendly materials and invites visitors and locals to come together and celebrate the arts and culture of the area.   Architectural designer Pip Bolton of Avail Pacific in Kerikeri created the design. She chose to use Abodo Vulcan Cladding as a natural timber to offset the rammed earth wall elements, which are a significant feature of the building’s design and reflect Hundertwasser’s love of natural materials and forms. Caption The design of the building reflects two hearts coming together, which means all walls are cur... More

Westmere House

With the extension and renovation of a 1940s brick bungalow in Westmere, Jon Smith and the team at Matter Architects have created a low-maintenance, light-filled and spacious home for a family of five. The resulting home fronts the street at three levels with the exterior clad in Abodo Vulcan Cladding in a deep black (Nero finish), creating a contemporary aesthetic that is strikingly juxtaposed against its more traditionally styled neighbours. Abodo Vulcan Screening adds to the clean lines of the home while also ensuring privacy. Read more about this project here. More
