The Butterfly Effect
As part of the Our Energy Our Landscape design challenge, a multidisciplinary team comprised of VenhoevenCS, DS landschapsarchitecten, and Studio Solarix developed a unique and innovative proposal that generates renewable energy while restoring natural connective routes for wildlife. The design for an ultra-light web over the motorway was created for the challenge location in the Netherlands, but it can easily be applied to other sites to become an important part of the sustainability of infrastructure and transport projects globally. This proposal offers a helping hand to small-scale ecosystems and in so doing contributes to a large-scale approach to climate change and biodiversity loss, hence The Butterfly Effect.

Kaiser-Josef-Platz project sees the transformation of a suburban square into a modern urban hub
In Wels, Austria, Part A of the Kaiser-Josef-Platz by atelier dede and Steinkogler Aigner Architekten sees a suburban square transformed into a hub that connects the country to the city. Though highly urban and modern, the interchange reflects influences from the surrounding area and landscape history with its openness as a public space allowing for farmer’s markets and festivals. Inclusion planning was also carried out during the design process in cooperation with the Upper Austrian Association of the blind and visually disabled people.

Making infrastructure do more: MVRDV and StudioPOD complete One Green Mile in Mumbai
Recently completed in Mumbai, the One Green Mile project by MVRD and StudioPOD transforms a series of neglected spaces below the city’s Senapati Bapat Marg flyover into public space for the entire local community. In addition to adding much-needed greenspace and amenities, the project improves mobility and brings a strong visual identity to the area. On a broader scale, One Green Mile presents a sustainable urban development model and illustrates how underused urban space can be reimagined.
