International School of Lausanne

The expansion of the International School of Lausanne has increased the school's capacity from 620 to 990 students from 3 to 18 years of age at the start of the 2015 school year. Divided into 3 stages, this project includes the construction of a new early childhood care structure - inaugurated in August 2014 - an auditorium with more than 400 seats, a library and a refectory with a rest area. These new facilities, designed and built by CCHE, have enabled the school to extend its range of services and improve the supervision of students. The conversion of the Châtelet school

The conversion of the Châtelet school in Biel by Morscher Architekten from Berne is proof that monuments are not necessarily detached from the passage of time and changing requirements.   At the end of the thirties of the 20th century, a new type of schoolhouse typology began to develop in Switzerland. After the school palaces of the turn of the century, the majority of which were built in the style of historicism or later in Art Nouveau, the concepts of modernism spread to school building during the inter-war period. This coincided with a change in pedagogical concepts towards an education which had a less constraining, more independent development of children in mind. A child-friendly scale, a lot of light, lots of air and th... More

Federal Way High School

The design of Federal Way High School is rooted in a progressive vision of how design supports and advances education. Driven by the client to rethink how educational facilities respond to changing teaching methods, the team began with facilitated programmatic studies that engaged the administration, community, and students. We scrutinized presumptions about pedagogy, program, and function. As a result, designers discerned the need for the new replacement high school to offer two primary types of spaces—flexible and adaptable—to serve today’s students and provide a future-proof strategy to serve those of tomorrow.Accounting for the diverse community within Federal Way, the 232,000 SF high school’s student-centered design reflects its commun... Nickby Heart

In Nickby, about 35 km northeast of Finland’s capital Helsinki, we find Nickby Heart – a school that used STENI Colour and STENI Vision in combination with interesting architecture to create a unique designed and vivid expression.Weatherproof!“We wanted each area of the schoolyard to have its own identity, and STENI façade panels gave us just what we wanted. The colours are sharp and clear – and they really stand up to the sun, wind and weather. In addition, we could get graphics at the same quality. It was not so expensive either,” says Pentti Kareoja, architect at ARK-house arkkitehdit Oy.The architect chose to use STENI Vision and STENI Colour façade panels – colourful and playful. More

Double Nursery School

The location is characterized by a slope oriented north-west which descends towards the lake and which adjoins an existing suburban area on the lower sector. The project is positioned in the lowest part, the flattest and sunniest of the plot, leaving free the green strip located on the top of the field. The spaces can thus be oriented and open to the sun. The ground level uses the existing topography and could be achievedsimply. The scale and geometry of the project refer to the environment; the perpendicular position to the slope allows permeability towards the lake. Thanks to various geometrical arrangements, the very simple elements compose an organic whole and create outside a series of outdoor spaces. The alternation of these interior... More

College & Community Center

The design goes beyond simply extending the school building. Instead, it strengthens the character and status of the existing system as a public space, a school and a municipal center. The building acts in the spirit of a “vertical network structure” by playing with the special topography of the area to connect the existing levels and uses. It is complemented by extended pathways in the exterior area. These new connections spatially reorder access to the school premises and create additional exterior spaces. The covered playground now acts as the main entrance to the school facing the village. The new section picks up on the formal and material vocabulary of the existing building and presents itself as a large grid of raw concr... More

Atheneum Pegasus

“Duco contributes to the building of an educational gem with DucoSun Ellips” In the autumn of 2014, the first sod was cut in the West Flanders seaside resort of Ostend for the construction of an impressive school complex. In order to cope expeditiously with the steady growth of Atheneum Pegasus, pupils and teaching staff were able, thanks to close cooperation between the stakeholders, to settle into the snazzy, elongated newbuild wing after scarcely one year. The design was handled by Urban Platform, whose main driving forces were sustainability and energy efficiency, as well as focusing on indoor climate. Close to the centre of Ostend, it is not only pupils and teaching staff, but also architecture enthusiasts and casual passers-by w... More
