Modern Craftsman

This is a house for a cinematographer.  The house carefully frames its views. Clerestory windows catch glimpses of palm trees and bounce soft light from under the deep eaves. Long vistas were carved through the house with new elements arranged to create a deep layered depth of field. The walls of the interior were punctured with openings to allow each room to “borrow” light from its neighbor. Jeremy Levine Jeremy Levine Jeremy Levine Jeremy Levine The addition is a two-story composition of decks, trellis elements, and sliding glass designed to modulate the intense southern light.  The cascading structural loads are expressed architecturally: the floor beams of the second story deck project out into... Three Trees

A house built around three trees. Rather than cutting down any trees on the lot, we built this house around them, enclosing them into open air courtyards. Every room in the house opens out into an outdoor space with a sheltering tree.  Jeremy Levine The design plays on the idea of a ‘Regional Modernism’ by merging two of the local architectural styles of the region: the thick walls and courtyards of the Spanish Colonial style and the exposed structure and open plan and glass walls of the California Case Study homes. Tom Bonner This is a zero-energy Passive House that produces its own solar power, heats water with solar hot water system, recycles grey water and captures rain water. Caption Sustainable Featu... The project includes a 10,000 SF Visitor’s Center, an observation deck and viewing areas, hiking trails, picnic areas and restoration of the natural landscape.    The turbulent history of the Baldwin Hills site, from oil wells to plans for massive residential development, stripped this mountain of most of its natural past. This was achieved by nestling the buildings into the hillside, conforming to the site&rsquo... More

Fairfax Conversion

Located in the West Hollywood/Fairfax neighborhood of Los Angeles, the site is just north of a transition from a smaller, two-lane pedestrian-friendly shopping district to a larger, four-lane driver-based thoroughfare with a central median. The project aims to expand this commercial district by addressing this shift from pedestrian to commuter. Additionally, it had to reconcile the variety of immediate contexts; a former industrial building with a commercial program in a relatively residential block.  The new aluminum siding is a nod to the metal paneling of the garage, but is elevated with a jade green color, monolithic application, and minimal details that avoid standard flashing profiles or exposed drainage. The two scales of s... More
