lighthouse hotel

The Lighthouse. The project brief is to design an offshore lighthouse hotel. The design criteria address renewable energy, harnessing wave energy to generate electricity by using the building's form. New building typologies should replace redundant ones, creating symbiotic relationships between various programs and supporting renewable energy by harnessing it as part of the building's infrastructure, whereby interdisciplinary research helps define sustainable appropriation. The lighthouse hotel's current location is off the coast of mainland South Korea near the island of Jeju, The site is accessible by boat through waters between 1500 ‒ 7000 ft deep. South Korea has a large number of offshore wind turbine farms, and since 2006 has inve... More

SUN

The urban artist, known as SpY, has completed the installation of a fifteen-meter diameter golden circle, made out of rescue blankets, all over the façade of one building located in the center of Ibiza, the Spanish Island All these golden rescue blankets occupy the whole surface of the circle resulting into an enormous mirror that changes as the light of the sun reflects on it. This unique effect not only illuminates the main street of this Spanish island but also affects its temperature and boosts the warmth of the ambient light of such location. This project was presented in the International “Bloop” Festival which leading axis and main core of all its artistic proposals was “Hope”. Through the use of these simple blan... Show arena and market area in the Central Park

In partnership with Gonçalo Byrne and Joao Nunes, MICROSCAPE has completed the urban transformation of the former Pini Horse Race Course, converting it into the centre of the new Central Park of Follonica. The show arena and the market area are the most extensive works of the integrated sustainable urban development programme implemented by the city with European funds. The urban project has been built as a real "landscape design", where the archetype of the Maremma dune landscape is linked to the terraced culture of the Tuscan hinterland. The project is thus a catalyst for the history, the life flow and the contemporary instances of urban ecology. We have not created a model but a process that interprets all the components of the landscape... More

The Hill where the sky and the sea take a break

GanjeolgotHaving the earliest sunrise on the eastern coast of Korea, Ganjeolgot (literally meaning the Earnest Cape) is a tourist attraction that contains both sweet stories and the natural settings such as breaking waves, cool endless sea, the white lighthouse, mail box, and a space for rest. It is famous as a drive way between Ulsan and Busan, and the neighborhood lately sees the rapid increase of commercial facilities such as cafes and restaurants due to the rise of floating population. The Flat Land with a Commonplace View on a Coastal Hill Surrounded by GreensThe project site is a trapezoid flat land with an area of 2,340 sq. m., which lies nearly 300 meters inland from the beach of Ganjeolgot. The Lighthouse

There are two ways of spreading light: being the source that irradiates it or the mirror that reflects it.The Lighthouse turns on as a small-scale housing solution, a flexible one-person proposal in the center of Bahía de Caráquez, Ecuadorian coast, the highest seismic risk zone in Ecuador. The traditional architecture of the Ecuadorian fulfills the implicit demand in itself The traditional architecture of the Ecuadorian coast meets the implicit demands in itself, which have been forgotten by current practices, it’s presented through this contemporary social dwelling, under a simple expression: vernacular architecture that respects the traditional logics of the area with lines of contemporaneity. Background: Bahía de Caráquez is a small coas... lightHOUSE - Tucson

lightHOUSE is a renovation of a 1964 Edward Nelson, FAIA, modernist home in the Catalina Foothills. The design concept was to reveal affinities between old and new, and inside and outside, through light, material, and attention to detail. The renovation took the house back to its bones - Douglas Fir posts and beams that recall the Case Study houses of California - black concrete floors, and brick perimeter walls that reference the Sonoran desert's earthen constructions. With a minimalist eye, the kitchen and master bedroom suite were completely re-conceived, along with the bathrooms, while the balance of the home was rejuvenated through material touches in support of the whole, all in an effort to manifest the latent dynamism in the 1964 des... CONCURSO FARO DE LA CULTURA

DES-COVER USWe live in a hinge period as a society between fragmentation and an invitation to integration. These issues are now being discussed more than ever at a global level and in Argentina. Different branches of art express their thinking and feeling about it.This contest is an invitation to reflect with architecture, commitment and sensitivity about what our attitude is and how to approach social differences and how to resolve them. We understand that it is a great opportunity for architecture to lend itself to service, reflect and represent an invitation to all for reflection, that this project be a SYMBOL of what happens and what we want as a society. Achieve human union and empathy!Since the implementation, the project has been com... More

Lighthouse

Knowhow Shop, a Design/Build studio located in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Highland Park, was founded in 2010 by Kagan Taylor and Justin Rice as an extension of their shared interests in traditional craft, digital fabrication, and a commitment to contemporary architectural design. Starting initially with small projects and unusual requests Knowhow Shop has built a reputation as a laboratory for material exploration, a conservatory of both digital and traditional craft, and a community space for strange and imaginative happenings. In their own architecture and design work Justin and Kagan continue to approach projects with a craftsperson’s sensitivity, genuine good humor, and a belief that what they make can redirect the discipline from... Project Treehouse

It is the small details, such as the closed and tilted angles of the sides that define the final look, minimalist form and considerable (12.5m) height of the Treehouse. As it is not a classic cubic structure, the inward-leaning triangular walls significantly reduce the interior space in the cabin. The only way of expanding the living space was therefore for the builders to increase the height of the building. It is fair to say that it is the small details that define the Treehouse, and not the other way around. The builders very much concentrated on the details before focusing on the whole. The Treehouse is a haven and functions almost like a lighthouse for lost travellers. People inside can put a light on the roof of the wood-panelled cabin... More

Lorient-Bretagne Sud Railway Station

The extension of the high-speed rail line to Brittany will soon allow a three-hour total travel time between Lorient and Paris. The new high-speed line along with a more frequent regional rail service (TER) and the introduction of bus rapid transit systems will enhance the network, thus increasing passenger flows throughout the station, which is expected to handle 2.5 million passengers throughout 2017 (compared to 1.5 million until recently).Alongside the increase in ridership, the surrounding neighbourhood has undergone a thorough transformation, which led to the reconfiguration of the site layout. The formerly abandoned rail land has been redeveloped in order to host a new urban project and brand-new public spaces. The new station has be... More

Bukkekjerka

The site is located along the Norwegian Scenic Route Andøya in Northern Norway. Characteristic for the site is the rock formation of “Bukkekjerka” between the road and the sea; a protected Sami cultural monument where nature has carved out an altar and a pulpit. Over the last 50-60 years this has been the venue of an annual open-air church service that attracts people from all over the district. In pre-Christian time this was a sacred site, where Sami people made offerings, to which the sacrificial cave on the seaside bears witness. When we first came to the site we were struck by the beauty of the place, andby its diversity; a dramatic landscape where the fierce North Sea meets the shore and later steep mountains, Sami tales and monuments c... Solvay Headquarters

Solvay, an advanced materials and chemical company, selected Danish architectural firm Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects to design its new headquarters in Brussels. The winning team, also comprised of local firm Modulo Architects and VK Engineers, was chosen after an international competition that included European firms OMA, Valode & Pistre, Wilmotte & Associés, and Henning Larsen. The new campus signals a shift for Solvay towards a more open, sustainable culture amidst a recent radical transformation of its business portfolio. The new building, located on the 22-hectare site that has housed many of Solvay's activities since 1953, will not be a typical corporate office, but rather a fluid, collaborative space where teams and pa... Polycarbonate Neverland —— Aranya Kid’s restaurant

Wutopia Lab was commissioned by Aranya to renovate part of club house into a restaurant for kids. We hope to create a neverland for kids in this space of less than 1,000 square meters.By digesting the physical properties of materials, we hope to create a place that loses material texture and spatial orientation. The carbonate polymer material used in the “One person’s gallery” case was used in combination with light to create an experience of losing sense of size and texture. Bubbles, colorless and transparent, will refract the rainbow, and are fleeting and unpredictable, but kids love them. The kid's restaurant should be a polycarbonate neverland. We used polycarbonate panels to wrap the original facade, a mixture of prairie villa style and... More

LOFOTEN’S NEW LANDMARK

The Svolvær Goat rage in the highlands outside Svolvær. But down in the city, it has competition from the skyline of the Norwegian Fishermen’s Sales Organization, decorated with nautical charts, lighthouses and sector lines.“The building was transformed from an ugly green spectre to the white swan of Lofoten.”This is how architect Ole Wiig, partner at NSW Arkitektur, explains the change process that he and his architects implemented when the building that houses the Norwegian Fishermen’s Sales Organization in Svolvær was renovated.Run downIt was a run-down building, suffering from a need for long overdue maintenance.“The façades of this architectural gem were more characterised by a bygone era,” according to Wiig. The original dressed concre...
