Espresso Alchemy Nina Tower

The concept for the cafe was inspired by the rich red-brown colors of coffee crema. Using a white base to create an atmosphere of lightness and to reflect in maximum daylight, we used a selection of red toned materials, each with a unique quality to express different elements of the architecture. Metagram The most visible event, the bar bench, positioned parallel to the mall corridor gives the frontage impetus and provides a strong visual edge to define the space. Clad in triangular terra-cotta pigmented concrete tiles with distinct three dimensional fluting, the dynamic material breaks down the monolith into a play of pattern and geometry. Metagram The working surface, a carefully selected terrazzo, features shards of red marbl... More

AUSTERITY

The domestic landscape reflects our culture, our taste and our habits. The objects that populate it absorb the atmosphere that pervades the space through their physicality, functionality and identity. Ostensibly living intact through good times and also adverse ones, the domestic objects become invisible to us over time with their familiarity. How can furniture react to times of crisis? The decorational elements that were once appreciated, suddenly become superfluous and should evolve to reflect a new era ofausterity; the objects become edible and offer themselves to be consumed when needed. In four conceptual objects, Lanzavecchia + Wai repropose basic nutrients, carbohydrates, proteins, sugar and chocolate as food reserves which at the sa... HEMP chair

Lightweight, strong and environmentally friendly, Hemp Chair is the first stackable single-shell small armchair devised and designed for the use of a new industrial material based on natural fibres. A sheet, with over 75% of its composition made up of hemp, is heat-formed via a production process with low environmental impact borrowed from the car-making industry. This technique ensures extreme ease of modelling which enables the softness of the shapes to be exaggerated to such an extent that they achieve an almost 3D effect. The Hemp Chair project is backed by the German chemicals company BASF and with its gemstone-shaped structure represents a new approach to this complex type of seat More

Xylinym

Background Xylinum is a research project that asks: “What could future materials and production processes look like?” It has been known for a long time, that micro-organisms can be used for industrial processes, like yeast cultures for production of bread, alcohol or cheese. Since it is possible to decode the DNA of organisms, and even to change it consciously, the so called “White Biotechnology” has changed fundamentally. Now it has become possible to replace chemical by organic processes. This already has happened in the textile and detergent industry and shows big potential in the production of energy or plastics. Bacterial-cellulose is such a material, which is produced by a bacterium called Acetobacter Xylinum. In a nutrition liquid i... More
