Villa Kavel 01

On the tip of an island near Amsterdam lies a mysterious black box. This is the house that Studioninedots built for a young family – a house full of surprises and contrasts. A house with dynamic spatial and material qualities: from an unlimited space with panoramic views of nature to private rooms hidden behind a veil of shutters, from sleek custom furniture against a raw concrete structure to warm timber paired with cold steel. Light and views were key elements of this design. The house was completed in January 2014. Situated directly on the waterfront with unobstructed views of the opposite park, Kavel 01 (meaning Lot 01) is what you could call a dream site. But one that posed a tough challenge: how do we build a spacious, liveable ho... More

Sculpture habitable

The “inhabitable sculpture” project, which received two awards at the Grands prix du design 2011, is the result of four years of work executed by numerous fabrication and installation teams. Two premises were established by the client at the beginning of the project: “a space that people will find cold” and “living in an art gallery.” All designers hope, sooner or later, to obtain such a commission, which enables them to avoid subjecting their work to the obvious sacrosanct “warmth” obtained through wood. In response to the owner’s request, the space was emptied of what the developers of the housing project had planned for her small 800-square-foot housing unit. Once the space was reduced to its original industrial concrete walls, floo... More

Education A revolution is going on in the Dutch educational system: from the traditional model of the teacher who presents his subject matter head-on in front of the class, the current primary point of departure is the self-responsible student. Learning is no longer based on whole-class teaching, but on individuality: the student decides his own learning path. Education now takes place by means of projects, tailored to the competences and areas of interest of the student: an evolution from supply-oriented education to demand-driven education. The 21st Century student does not only learn in classrooms, but is independent enough to acquire, store and process information in other places as well. This revolution demands a totally new s... Kith Cafe¦ü

The concept for Kith Café was inspired by a simple phrase from the Japanese film, Be with you. It translates into “would you care to have coffee with me sometime?” a plain and sincere question that has the power to turn strangers into kith and kin. It was not just a matter of coming up with a Kith Café, but creating a complete experience. This meant no fancy lampshades, mass-manufactured furniture, or unnecessarily printed materials were to be used in its interior. Instead, the focus was on delivering an unassuming space that could support Kith’s honest philosophy and ethos. Upon entering the quaint 28 square meter space, customers could choose to sit on a long, tall communal bar table on the left seating or a low bench area on the... More
